Donald was born Jan. 20, 1916, in Des Moines, Iowa, to John William and Edna Mae (Wood) Austin. He was reared and educated in Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas City. He married Iva Cunningham on April 17, 1939, at Winfield. The couple made their home in Arkansas City. Donald worked in the bridge and boiler departments of the Sante Fe railroad for 20 years. He later worked as a repairman and shop foreman at the General Electric Jet Engine Maintenance Facility at Strother Field. Don enjoyed trains, collecting replicas of old cars, coins, and belt buckles, but mostly fishing and tinkering with his old junk.
Survivors include his wife, Iva, of the home; a daughter, Diane, and her husband, Lloyd Birdzell of Winfield; one son, William, and his wife, Jean Austin of Arkansas City; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Charles Dennis Austin; two brothers and three sisters.
Memorials have been established with the Good Samaritan Society of Winfield and the American Heart Association. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Arrangements are being made through the Rindt-Erdman Funeral Home of Arkansas City.
