•Volunteered for three years at Knoxville, Iowa on May 21, 1861, was mustered as a private into the army on June 10, 1861 and was assigned to Company B, 3rd Iowa Infantry Regiment
•Contracted malaria and was sent to Evansville, Indiana for sick leave between March 23 and June 16, 1862
•Was wounded in the left knee near Hatchie Mississippi on October 5, 1862
•Was discharged on January 3, 1864, but re-enlisted at Hebron, Mississippi in February 1864
•Received a veteran's furlough during which he married Mary Ann McCorkle on April 28, 1864 at Columbia, Iowa
•Was promoted to Corporal on May 1, 1864
•Was taken prisoner by the Confederates near Atlanta, Georgia on July 22, 1864
•Was interned at the infamous Andersonville prison until release at East Point, Georgia on September 20, 1864 when he returned to the regiment
•Was honorable discharged on July 12, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky
•Was 5' 11" tall with blue eyes, fair skin and light brown hair
