Evelyn was one of seven children born to the union of the late Ether Bert and Rosa Arthrusa (Manes) Smith. She was born August 27, 1917 at Richwoods, Missouri in Miller County.
In 1934, Evelyn married Frank Routh in Waynesville. After four heartbreaking attempts, Evelyn and Frank were blessed with one daughter, Betty. Frank preceded Evelyn in death in 1976. Throughout their life together, Evelyn enjoyed being a farm wife. She always had huge vegetable gardens, canning as much produce as possible. She also enjoyed working in her flower beds.
Evelyn was a long time member of the Sweet Home Church near Crocker, but she enjoyed attending services in many area churches. In her later years, it was not unusual for her to attend three different churches a week; one on Sunday morning, a different one on Sunday evening and yet another on Wednesday. Evelyn was blessed with a beautiful voice. She loved to sing and could play the piano by ear.
Evelyn was known for her loving, giving spirit. She enjoyed helping friends and neighbors. While visiting family members at Waynesville Nursing Home, she would end up back in the kitchen or helping with laundry.
Evelyn was dearly loved, and will be sadly missed by her daughter: Betty McClain and husband, Carlis of Laquey, MO; grandson: Jeff McClain and wife, Becky of St. Robert; two great grandchildren: Ryan and Carly McClain; 2 nieces, 2 nephews, very good friends, Bill and Virgie Lane of Crocker, MO and several other relatives and friends.
In addition to her parents, her husband and four infants, Evelyn was preceded in death by four sisters: Fern Barton, Marie Carmack, Beulah Davidson and Delphia Smith and two brothers: Thurman and Herman Smith.
Funeral services were held at 1:00 P.M. Friday, February 6, 2009 in the Memorial Chapel of Waynesville/St. Robert with Rev. Lindell Shelden and Rev. Billy Claiborn officiating. Evelyn's great granddaughter, Carly McClain played the prelude, postlude and "The Old Rugged Cross". The songs "Amazing Grace" and "In The Garden" were also played. Serving as escorts were Ron Routh, Paul Hutsell, Gary Carmack, Nathan Carmack, Kenny Foster, Gerald Wyatt, Bill Lane and D.L. Carver.
Burial followed in the Antioch Cemetery near Crocker, Missouri. Services were under the direction of Memorial Chapels and Crematory.
Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Evelyn Routh to the Waynesville/St. Robert Senior Center and may be left at Memorial Chapels and Crematory.
