James E. Scherden, 79, of Tipton, who retired in 1961 as caretaker of the Cricket Field for the Pennsylvania Railroad, died at 12:05 p.m. yesterday, July 7, 1971, in the Fitzgerald Nursing Home, where he had been a patient for the past two months.

He was born Jan. 27, 1892, in Altoona, a son of Joseph and Sarah (Mort) Scherden, and June 6, 1915, in East Freedom, married Bernadine Rhodes, who died Nov. 5, 1965.

Surviving are 10 children, Paul, Ralph, Raymond, Thomas and Joseph of Altoona, Edward of New Cumberland, Francis of Douglas, Ariz., Daniel of Cheyenne, Wyo., Mrs. Sarah Piotrowski of Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Beatrice Thomas of San Jose, Calif.; 29 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Mr. Scherden was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church, Bellwood, and Knights of St. George. He served the Pennsylvania Railroad for 50 years prior to retirement.

Friends will be received in the Johnson Funeral Home, Bellwood, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.
