Franklin L. Carifa , 74, of New Britain, beloved husband of Lorraine M. (Marino) Carifa , died on Friday, (October 24, 2003) after a short illness. Born in Taunton, MA, to the late Alfred Carifa and Beatrice Dawley Carifa , Mr. Carifa was raised in New Britain. A graduate of New Britain High School, he served in the Air National Guard during the Korean War, and afterward, attended Hillyer College. Mr. Carifa began a 45-year career in banking, working for Burritt Mutual Savings Bank and American Savings Bank. Mr. Carifa served for many years as the manager of the Slater Road office of Burritt Mutual Savings during which time he hosted student art exhibits and was instrumental in establishing and maintaining the student savings program in the New Britain School System. Later he served as manager of the Allen Plaza office of American Savings and bank officer at the main office, retiring from banking in 1994. Mr. Carifa was active in community and church affairs. He served as president of the Civitan Club of New Britain, as president of the local chapter of the American Institute of Banking, as leader with his wife in Pre-CANA program at St. Joseph Church and St. Francis of Assisi Church , and most recently, on the finance committee at St. Francis of Assisi Church. He loved skiing and bowling in his youth and was an avid gardener. In addition to his wife, Mr. Carifa is survived by his children, son, Franklin L. Carifa Jr. and wife Nancy D. Carifa of Berlin, son, Kenneth J. Carifa and friend, Mark Garavel, of New Britain and daughter, Loralyn C. Callahan and husband Edward J. Callahan of Newington; a brother, Alfred R. Carifa and wife, Anne Carifa of Enfield; and sister, Shirley M. Poulin of Bristol; six grandchildren, Jason A. Carifa of Mansfield, MA, Kevin and Shaun Carifa , both of Berlin, Ryan, Tyler and Lyndsey Callahan, all of Newington, Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 28, 2003, at 9 a.m. from New Britain Memorial-Sagarino Funeral Home, 444 Farmington Ave., New Britain, followed by the funeral liturgy at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
