Shelley was born to Joe and Lynn Mathis. Shelley graduated from Lompoc High School in 1980, Santa Barbara Business College in 1996 as a Medical Assistant, and Allan Hancock College in 2005. She worked in the finance department of Martin Marietta Aerospace for 13 years, another 5 years with the Santa Barbara County Probation Department, and a few years part time for the Lompoc School District. She was married to William T. Standley in 1983 and later divorced. They had one son, Devin Blaine Standley.
Her survivors include her son Devin Blaine, her parents, Joe and Lynn Mathis, sister Sheila Matousek (John), niece Brittany, nephew Jared, great niece Amber (all of Madera, CA), her aunts Mildred Dautenhahn of Arnold, Missouri, and Imogene McLaughlin of Macon, Georgia, as well as numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her infant brother, Michael Blaine Mathis, her grandparents, and several aunts and an uncle.
