PAWNEE - Gussie Lee Cary, 92 of Pawnee, died Feb. 9, 2009, at St. John's Hospice in Springfield.

Gussie was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Cascade, the son of Jessie C. and Minnie O. Ford Cary. He married Velma L. Skaggs on Feb. 24, 1945, in Decatur. She preceded him in death in 2001. He also was preceded by his parents; stepfather, George Miller; and brother, Freddie C. Cary.

Gussie was a farmer in the Pawnee area his entire life, and he owned the Gaslite Court in Springfield. He also formerly owned Cary's Campground. He was a member of Rochester State Bank's board of directors for 41 years and the Sangamon County Farm Bureau.

Gussie is survived by three daughters, Barbara L. (husband, Roy) Hart of Chatham, Christine Cary of Pawnee and Jean (husband, Curt) Brickey of Pawnee; two grandchildren, Jim Hart of Edinburg and Tom Hart of Pawnee; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will meet friends Wednesday, Feb. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Curry Funeral Home in Pawnee. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the funeral home with Jim Thome officiating. Burial will follow at Horse Creek Cemetery in Pawnee.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Hospice or a charity of your choice.
