Russell Byers lived all his life in Augusta and Rockingham counties in the Shenandoah Valley. He was the son of Henry and Sadie Croushorn Byers. Russell also had two sisters and two brothers.

His wife was the late Louise Baker Byers who died in September 2005. They had three children: Russell Byers Jr (wife Janice); Linda Byers; and Kay Byers Phillips (husband Brad). Five grandchildren: Stephanie Byers, Kevin Byers, Eric Byers, James Phillips and David Phillips; and two great-grandchildren: Hailey and Jenna Phillips.

Russell worked most of his career for VDOT and retired as a foreman. He was also a talented woodworker. Indeed, he possessed many worthy personality and character traits. He was a charter member of Bethany United Methodist Church at Mt. Crawford.
