Dustin was born February 10, 1952, the second daughter of Jeff and Virginia Hicks. Her elementary and junior high school years were spent in Yuma and Wellton, Arizona, and El Centro, California. She attended Antelope High School in Wellton, Arizona from 1966 to 1968; then attended, and graduated from Central Union High School (El Centro) in 1970.
Her mother's remarriage prompted the moves to Wellton, El Centro, and later beach area in sunny southern California. Shortly after moving to El Centro, Dustin and family welcomed her new brother, Devon Bond, to the family. Devon was born 12 NOV 1967.
In Dustin's own words: "Life has not been at all what I planned and yet I couldn't have planned it better! I've moved a lot which was something my family always did, but am pretty much settled now in Central Oregon to be close to my mother. My daughters live in Washington State as do my two grandchildren. My son lives in Los Angeles. They are happy and healthy and that's a huge success in my book. I am now managing an equestrian/hospitality center which is extremely challenging and frustrating and fulfilling. I'm enjoying being a part of something being built from the ground up. There's nothing like it in our area and it is pretty exciting. It's not a "normal" job and I like that too. I never did fit very well into the regular work world. I don't guess I ever will!"
Dustin's interests were varied: playing board games, watching movies and reading; canoeing and hiking; dining out; listening to music (classical, opera, country, bluegrass, alternative, rock 'n roll) - her love of music nurtured by those early piano lessons. Paramount in her life were her family and friends.
Dustin was also an entrpreneur and small business owner. She owned 'Dustin's Dusters' and created custom dusters to order.
She also served as Treasurer/Membership Director of the La Pine Rodeo Association.
In August of 2008 she was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Surgery was immediate. She "fought the good fight", undergoing radiation and chemo following the surgery. She passed away December 14, 2008 in La Pine, Oregon.
Dustin is survived by her mother Virginia Bankston Storts and step-father Noel Storts both of LaPine, Oregon; older sister Melanie Lynn (Charles) Westrom; younger sister Aleta Ann Hicks (Ronnie GRIFFITHS) of El Centro, Ca.; 3 children and 2 grandchildren. Her beloved brother, Devon Bond, preceded her in death as the result of a plane crash.
A celebration of Dustin's life was held Friday, December 19, 2008, 11:30 a.m., at the Baird Memorial Chapel, 16468 Finley Butte Rd., La Pine, Oregon.
