James was the first child born in Fleenor's Fort, where his parents took refuge during their first winter in Indiana with other settlers for protection from the Indians during the War of 1812. One June 30, 1835 he married Delilia Burks at Fleehors, Putnam County, Indiana. They had 5 children: Elizabeth, Mary Jane, Harvey, Elisha and Jeneatta Ann.

Following the family artisan tradition, James was a millwright by trade. One of the mills he built was at Cataract Falls, Owen County, Indiana.

He caught pneumonia while working as a millwright on a mill near Spring Cave, Owen County, Indiana and died at the age of 35.

His wife Delilia is buried at Cloverdale Cemetery, Putnam County, Indiana. James does not appear on the Cloverdale Cemetery Index.

According to The Denny Genealogy - Third Book, he was buried at Middletown, near Quincy, Indiana
