He was wounded on May 3, 1863, at Chancellorsville, Virginia. From this wound he lost three fingers on his right hand and carried a minnie ball in his thigh for 30 years. His great-granddaughter Cenus Phillips Heptinstall kept the minnie ball in a white handkerchief until her death in 2003.

Census of Confederate Soldiers.

Tax Assessor J. A. Wise has completed the census of Confederate Soldiers residing in Chambers County. This list has been prepared for purpose of record in the Department of Archives and History. The census shows 202 old soldiers in the county. Mr. Clay Barron, of Beat 4, is the oldest, having been born Sept. 22, 1818, while the youngest is Mr. B. S. Smith, of Stroud, born Feb. 16, 1851.

Wadley Street - (for last week) We are sorry to say that the death angel visited the home of Mrs. Mary Phillips and bore away the spirit of her father, Mr. Green Barnes, aged 91 years. The family has the sympathy of their many friends.

AND...in the same issue:

Milltown (for last week) – Uncle Green *Barnes, of near here, who was supposed to be the oldest citizen in Chambers County (91 years), passed from time into eternity last Monday night, August. 30th. His remains were interred in Milltown Cemetery Tuesday evening. Uncle Green was well known in this section. Brother Welch conducted funeral services.
