Robert E. Aker, age 87, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, in Smyth
County Community Hospital. Mr. Aker was born in Smyth County, Va., to the late
Robert E. and Elizabeth Wassum Aker. He was a life member of Elizabeth
Methodist Church, Teas, Va., where he served in several capacities including
Sunday School teacher and choir member. He attended faithfully and regularly
as long his health permitted. Mr. Aker was a finish carpenter with great skill
and for many years was employed in construction and maintenance. He later held
several positions as supervisor and management in local industries and retail
furniture. He was employed as manager of the Scott Furniture Annex for a
number of years. Finally, his employment took him to the defense department at
Brunswick Corporation in Marion from which he retired at the age of 68.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert Jackson Aker;
two brothers, James and Roy; and three sisters, Margaret, Sue and Bessie. He
is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Edna H. Aker of Marion. Also
surviving are his loving in-laws, Agnes and Fred Weiland and Lillian and
Dwight Earnest, all of Port Charlotte, Fla., Kathleen "Peggy" and Joseph
Hirsch of Baltimore, and Loveita E. Hamm of New Castle, Del. Also, Mr. Aker is
survived by very special and dedicated friends, W.S. and Eleanor Meek of Sugar
Grove, Va.,. and Hazel and Jay Harper of Marion, whose patience and kindness
never ceased through his long illness. Several wonderful nieces and nephews
survive. Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, 2002, at 11 a.m. at
Elizabeth United Methodist Church, Teas, Va., with Rev. Kenneth Conner
officiating. Burial will follow in Ridgelawn Cemetery, Sugar Grove, Va. The
body will be taken to the church one hour before the service. The family will
receive friends Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at Seaver-Brown Chapel.
