Col. F. Gene Porter, 78, retired U.S. Army colonel, died Monday, February 9, 2009, of heart failure at Mississippi State Veterans Home in Collins, MS.
Col. Porter was a loving and supportive husband and father and an avid animal lover. A native of Cottonwood, AL, he graduated from Auburn University and also received extended training while in the military. He served 32 years in the Armed Services including several years in the Air Force, Army Reserve and active duty with the U.S. Army, receiving numerous medals and awards in honor of his service.
During the last 25 years of his career, he served as an analyst, administrator and manager with various departments of the military, including Headquarters, US Army; the office of the Secretary of Defense; the Department of State; NATO and its other member nations. He also assisted in researching and writing the official history of the Army's Logistics efforts in Vietnam.
Survivors include: his wife of 40 years, Sara Margaret Smith Porter of Brandon, MS; son, James (Jimmy) Porter of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sisters, Kathleen Price of Avondale Estates, GA, and Susan Youngblood of Mobile, AL; one nephew, Brett Price of Pensacola, FL; two nieces, Kathy Smith of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Brittain Youngblood of New York City, NY.
Following Col. Porter's wishes, there will be no funeral services. His body is being donated to the University of Mississippi Medical Center to promote better understanding of the heart and its related problems. A private memorial service will be held, at a later date, to scatter his ashes in a pet cemetery where he wished to be with his deceased pets.
