He married Lorenza Jaramillo on March 30, 1887 in San Rafael, New Mexico and raised a family of nine children; Alfredo, Prudencia, Beneranda-1, Josefita, Beneranda (Bennie), Vitalina (Bessie), Monico, Silvestre Jr. and Fredrico Mirabal.
He was a rancher and raised sheep and cattle and was a well respected man in Valencia County and thru out New Mexico and Arizona. (He served as a delegate to the New Mexico Constitutional Convention in 1889, as chairman of the County Commission from 1889 to 1891, as member of the New Mexico Territorial House of Representatives from 1891 to 1905, as a member of th National Rivers and Stream Commission, as chairman of the board of the Bank of Commerce, and was inducted into the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma posthumously, in the 1960's. He also had a general merchandise store in San Rafael, according to Abe Pena ).
