Rev. D.G.C. Butts
Answers Last Call
A former Gloucester pastor of the M. E. Church South, who will be well
remembered by many of the older generation, passed to the great beyond last
Thursday, when Rev. D. G. C. Butts, one of the outstanding retired ministers in
the Virginia Conference, died at his home, "Done Moving Cottage," at Oceana,
near Norfolk.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Alphronia Swann Butts, he is survived by four daughters:
Mrs. G. S. Marchant of Mathews; Mrs. O. W. Byrd, of Norfolk; Mrs. John T.
Fitzpatrick, Nelson, and Mrs. S. A. Brock, of Virginia Beach; also a son, Emmett
T. Butts, of Richmond.
Mr. Butts was a member of Marshall Lodge, A.F. & A. M., Lynchburg and the Kappa
Alpha fraternity, 1871. He was also chaplain of R. E. Lee Camp, Confederate
Veterans, of Hampton, having served with honor in the War Between the States.

The Reverend Daniel Gregory Claiborne Butts attended Randolph Macon College from 1868-1871 and was licensed to preach March 6, 1869 by the Methodist Episcopal Church South. His autobiography, "From Saddle to City by Buggy, Boat, and Railway" was published in 1922.
While serving in Caroline County, he met Alphronia Emma Swann, and they were married November 13, 1872 at Mt. Tero, Caroline County, Virginia.
Reverend Daniel Butts was born October 10, 1848 in Brunswick County, Virginia and died November 13, 1930 in Oceana, Virginia.
