William was born in Zeigler Illinois. His parents were Joseph Hobson Casson Sr (1895-1957), born in Durham, Cumbria, England and Edythe Mae Curry (1901-1959), born in Port Saint Lucie, Ontario, Canada. Robert's siblings were: Mary (1919-1989), Lucille, Stewart (1922-1949) and Joseph (1927-1977). His family moved to Chicago from Zeigler after the coal mine strike/lockout which caused his parents to lose their home. Robert played the trumpet as a child. His parents were devout Episcopalians, though his mother was raised Roman Catholic in a convent. His father was choir master and his mother was church organist for St Paul Episcopal Church in Zeigler. Robert joined the US Navy at age 17 and served nearly 20 years. He served in Italy and France during World War II. After the war, he married Barbara Elaine Bliss of Massachusetts while stationed there. They were married in Taunton, Massachusetts. He has one child: Janet. And one grandchild: Kevin, who is currently serving in the US Navy as a pilot. The US Navy transfered Robert to Long Beach, California in 1958 where he served on a destroyer. He died of uremic poisoning at age 35. He was a devoted husband and father, an Episcopalian and Freemason. He enjoyed tinkering with auto engines and kept his 1958 Oldsmobile in pristine condition. He had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He is missed greatly by family and friends.
