LA CROSSE/SPARTA, Wis. — Phillip G. Arneson (1920-2008) was born in Barneveld, Wis., to Anton and Agnes Arneson. He worked in the Barneveld State Bank through high school before attending UW Madison. Phil enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during wartime as a supply officer on the USS Allen M. Sumner. While serving in the Navy, he attained a degree at Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration and had the honor of being chosen as a George F. Baker scholar. He taught an officer supply course at Harvard. By the time he was honorably discharged, he had made his decision to go into law and returned to UW Madison for his law doctorate. This was the beginning of his legal career in La Crosse as a prosecutor and trial lawyer spanning almost 40 years. Though he tried many high-profile cases, he was equally known for representing persons with little or no means. He was available 24/7, and it wasn't uncommon for a client to show up at his doorstep at an unlikely hour only to be welcomed into his living room.
Phil was a member of the American Trial Lawyers Association, served as past president of the La Crosse Country Club, a Mason and a Shriner. His passion was flying, logging 4,500 hours as a private pilot and owner of a Cessna 182. He loved hunting, fishing, golfing and skiing with family and good friends. Anyone who ever visited Phil and Kathryn's home knows what an accomplished cook he was and the enthusiasm with which he prepared culinary delights from steak tartare to lobster thermidor, and the affection with which it was served. He was a man born to serve — his country, his community, and his family and friends in need. We salute you Phil!
Phil leaves behind Kathryn, his wife and partner in every way; daughters, Christine A. H. Daigler, Amy Luckeroth, Stephanie Lillard; and sons, Trygve, Peder, Andy, Doug and Jeff; and 20 grandchildren. Predeceased by his sons, David and Alan; and grandson Jeff. Also survived by his brothers, Sam and Carl; and sister, Barbara. Predeceased by his brother, Ted; and sister, Rebecca Nause.
Phil's ashes will be buried at the family plot at 10 a.m. Monday in Blue Mound, Wis., with a memorial service being held at the Elleson Funeral Home in Mt. Horeb, Wis. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Spring Grove Restaurant in Mt. Horeb afterward.
