Rhoda was the daughter and eldest child of Richard Merrill and Mary Pillsbury of Newbury Massachusetts. Rhoda was born there and went to New Hampshire with her brother Nathan in her early 40's after her parents passed away. Rhoda was a spinster. Her brother ran an Inn on the Baker River in Rumney New Hampshire just south of Wentworth where the son of Thomas Whipple Sr resided. Thomas, a Baptist Minister born in CT, had first been married to Lydia Gates who died 1795 leaving him with eight children to care for, the youngest three of whom were under the age of five. Soon after Lydia's death he married again, to Ruth (Smith) Woodward a widow living in Hanover NH where Thomas then lived, she a woman he had known in his youth. Ruth died in July of 1817 and Thomas and Rhoda were married in October of that year in Rumney NH. Thomas was about 65 and Rhoda 52, his third marriage and her first.

Around 1822 Thomas and Rhoda went to New York State where his son Walter had resided before moving to Michigan. His daughter Waity Tabor may have been living there at the time. Waity and her family moved to Wayne County Michigan near her brother Walter in 1829 and Thomas and Rhoda joined them in the household in Michigan. Thomas and Rhoda and the Tabors lived in farmland adjacent to the McLain (Jack) family and it is there where the little cemetery was established for the neighborhood families. Thomas died in early August of 1833 with his wife Rhody following him two weeks later. Both were lain to rest side by side in the cemetery bordering their property now known as the McLain Cemetery. Thomas was 81 and Rhoda was one month short of 68.
