East Providence - James T. Burns, 78, of Circuit Drive, Riverside, a retired claims manager, died yesterday at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Henry) Burns. They had been married for 53 years. Born in East Providence, a son of the late James T. and Eva (Kennedy) Burns, he had lived in Riverside for 42 years. Mr. Burns had worked as a claims manager for the Shelby Insurance Co., Braintree, Mass., for 27 years, retiring in 1987. He had worked as an adjuster for Providence Washington Insurance Co. from 1950 to 1960. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific aboard the Allen M. Sumner. He was a life member of Riverside Bishop Hickey Council, Knights of Columbus, where he was a member of the 4th-degree St. Pius X, and a member of American Legion Riverside Post 10. He was a communicant of St. Brendan Church. He enjoyed golfing. His wife is his only survivor. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. from W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside. Burial with military honors will be in Mount St. Mary Cemetery, Pawtucket.
