Pearl was born June 27, 1922, in Brookings, SD, to the late John Albert and Minnie Heusinkveld Kukuk. The Kukuk family moved to Rapid City in 1927, where Pearl grew up and graduated from Central High School. She married her childhood sweetheart, Earl F. Underwood on Jan. 7, 1942, in Rapid City. He preceded her in death on Dec. 19, 2008.
With her husband being a military officer, they traveled the world and moved 53 times before they retired in 1962. They moved back to their hometown of Rapid City in 1967. It was during their time in the Army that Pearl and Earl raised their four children.
Pearl had a keen interest in almost everything she saw and heard. She was an accomplished seamstress, taught ceramics and decorated cakes. She studied the world and its history and geology. She passed on to her children a love for the arts and classical music.
She was involved in her community, Boy and Girl Scouts, her church (First Presbyterian) where she served as a deacon, was a member of the UPW, taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, worked with low income ministries and meeting the needs of shut-ins.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Clifton C. Kukuk, and one grandson, Tate Simonton.
