I found this on an ancestry tree. I will be making a library trip to see what I can find on this one. He would be my relation through Cora Miles.

This story is from Nadine last name deleted to protect living until permission given to add.

Ralph Miles was adopted by a Canadian Lumberman named "Humbird." Ralph came back to Missouri and was looking for his birth family; which he found, but Ralph had a tragic ending. He was shot. There is an article in the Springfield Missouri Newspaper about the incident but the family tells the story a little different.... true of course. Ralph is buried in Hazelwood Cemetery in Springfield Missouri under the name of Richard K. Miles. Ralph's oldest sister Pearl made the arrangements according to Cora Miles, wife of Paddy, son of John Henry Miles and Sarah Jane Sutton Miles. Cora said that Ralph had been educated in England. He loved motorcycles, white shirts, and guns. Ralph had stayed with Cora and Paddy for a while.

Gunshot Victim Dies Of Wound
More Serious Charge To Face Woman Hotel Operator Result of Miles Death

Richard Robert Miles, 24 yr old restaurant employee, died at 2:40 am yesterday in City Hospital from complications resulting from bullet wounds he recieved early Wednesday morning at the Portland hotel, 320 1-2 West Pershing.
Charges of either manslaughter or second degree murder will be filed today against his assailant, Minnie Katherine Gann, 29, operator of the hotel. County Attorney William Collinson said last night. The Gann woman admitted to Collinson she shot Miles, but said it was an accident.

Freed on Old Bond

However, felonious assault charges were filed against her last night week when she was released on $3,000 bond. She was arrested early yesterday morning after Miles death and released later after Collinson decided the $3,000 bond was sufficient to hold her until a more serious charge was filed.

Miles according to Dr. J Newton Wakeman, city physcian died of peritonitis and shock. Only one bullet was fired, but it struck Miles in the side, went on through and lodged in his right leg.

The Gann woman said she went into the room of Don Sanders at the hotel early Wednesday morning to collect Sanders' room rent. Miles was in the room,k she said, and he invited her to have a drink. He showed her a revolver he had in his pocket and started twirling it. She got her revolver from a room across the hall and he was showing her hot to twirl it, the Gann woman told Collinson. The gun went off, she said, accidently.

Returned To City

Miles was born in Springfield, but his parents died when he was an infant. They were John H Miles and Sarah Sutton Miles. He was adopted shortly after their death by Mr. and Mrs. J A Humbird of British Col. They took him to their home there he stayed until about three years ago when he returned to Springfield.

While in Canada, he served in the army, but was discharged when a partially paralyzed leg bothered him too much for active service.

Funeral serviced will be at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Alma Lohmeyer chapel, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery. Survivors include four sisters, Mrs Clea Walton, Mrs Bonnie Taylor, and Mrs Sophie Bowser, all of Springfield, and Mrs Ruth Porter of Seneca; three brothers, John C Miles of Elwood, Leroy Miles of San Bernardino, Cal., and Pat Miles of Springfield.

Murder Charge On Mrs. Gann
Action Follows the Death of Cook, Who Told Police Operator Shot Him.

A charge of second degree murder was filed against Minnie Katherine Gann, hotel operator who shot young Richard Robert Miles in a hotel room drinking party last week in Justice Boehm's court this afternoon.
Mrs. Gann made $3,000 bond, with Fred Nearing and W E Trotter as bondmen.
Preliminary hearing was set for September 23.
Miles, 24, a restaurant worker who lived at the YMCA, died early yesterday morning at City hospital. Officers of the city police department talked with him Saturday afternoon--Miles was confident at the time he would recover, they said.

Twirling His Gun
He was shot early Wednesday morning, in the room of Don Sanders at the Portland hotel, 320 1-2 West Pershing. Mrs Gann who operates the hotel admitted the shooting, but contends her gun discharged accidentally, as she was trying to twirl it at Miles suggestion.
Miles told officers, however, that Mrs. Gann shot while twirling his gun, with his back turned toward her. Whe he asked her why she shot, he said, she didn't answer, but urged him not to tell officers "how it happened."
Miles said he was not in the habit of carrying a gun and didn't want to leave the weapon at the YMCA--so he took it to Sanders' room to leave it. The two were employed at the same restaurant.
When it was believed Miles would recover, felonious assault charges were filed against Mrs. Gann. She had been free on bond on those charges with Nearing and Trotter at sureties. The assault charge was dismissed today.

Peritonitis Blamed
Peritonitis and shock from the wound were given as the causes of Miles' death.
He was born in Springfield, but had lived in British Columbia, with his foster parents, Mr and Mrs. J A Humbird, most of his life. About three years ago he returned to Springfield. He was in the army service in Canada, but was discharged becaues of a partially paralyzed leg.
Survivors are four sisters, Mrs. Cleo Walton, Mrs Bonnie Taylor, and Mrs Sophie Bowser, all of Springfield, and Mrs. Ruth Porter of Seneca; three brothers, John C Miles of Elwood, Leroy Miles of San Bernardino, Cal., and Pat Miles of Springfield.
Funeral services were held at Alma Lohmeyer chapes this afternoon, with burial in Hazelwood Cemetery.
