Born January 4, 1925 in Farmington, IL to Robert H. and Matilda H. (Brohn) Nichols, he married Erma Lucille Mann on November 13, 1948 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are four daughters, Donna (James) Hash of Bridgeport, West Virginia, Cynthia "Cindy" Nichols, Renee (Rich) Happach, and Marietta (Frank) Nelson, all of Pekin; two sons, Daniel Nichols and Gary Nichols, both of Pekin; fourteen grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Rosemary Johnson of Yates City; and two brothers, James (Mary Jean) Nichols and David (Patricia) Nichols, both of Canton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and five brothers.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, he later served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1964. He attained the rank of Technical Sergeant.
Walt worked as a roofer in the Peoria area for many years. He later worked maintenance for Richard Stropes in Pekin.
He was a former member of the AMVETS and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 12, 2009 at the Preston-Hanley Funeral Home, Pekin Chapel. The Rev. Tom Cone will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glendale Memorial Gardens in Pekin, where military rites will be accorded.
