The full name of this early ancestor appears to have been Edward Dycus Hawkins, named for his grandfather. He was born in 1773 to Thomas and Nancy Dycus Hawkins. On June 25, 1801, he married Mary Polly" Rollins, daughter of James Mason arid Priscilla Blount Rollins. By the time he was twenty years old, his lather had died, leaving him with a widowed mother and several younger brothers and sisters. In the 1800 census records, he is listed as the head of household" even though he was still single at the time.
Early in life, he began to follow in the footsteps of his father, acquiring small tracks of land when and where they became available, and over a period of years owned several hundred acres in an area roughly between Henrietta and Mooresboro. At one time he owned 200 acres near Concord Baptist Church on a branch of Webb's Creek, which he purchased from Labon Ledbetter. Today, East Rutherford
Edward Hawkins was a farmer and very likely a distiller, which was quite legal in those days. High School is on that site.
He settled a homestead and raised his family on a branch of Grog Creek, just south of the present-day Gantt's Grove Baptist Church, near the Rutherford-Cleveland County line.
Ned and Polly, as they were generally known to family and friends, saw to it that each of their sons were well-situated on a farm of their own by the time they were old enough to assume responsibility, or get married, whichever came first. They were loyal members of Sandy Run Baptist Church where they evidently remained members until their death.
Edward and Mary Hawkins were the parents of at least seven children:
(1) Samuel Hawkins, born 1802, married first, Jane Webb and second, Hannah (Moore) Hicks.
(2) Thomas Hawkins, born also about 1802 (it is believed that Samuel and Thomas were twins, or born within a year of each other), married Elender Williams. They were the parents of seven children: George Martin Hawkins, born 1825, married Delila Rollins; Elizabeth Hawkins, born 1832; William A. Hawkins, born 1834, married Martha E. Crowder; Daniel A.
