Considered the Father of Orthopedic Surgery, John Joshua Ridlon was born the s/o Noel Potter & Nancy Bromley (Hulett), on November 24, 1852 in Clarendon, Rutland County, Vermont. He was named after both his maternal & paternal grandfathers, however, he didn't like the name and had it changed to John Frederick Ridlon.

John Frederick Ridlon was an 1878 graduate of the College of Physicians & Surgeons. Following school, he was united in marriage to Emily Caroline (Robinson) Ridlon on June 4, 1879, in Newport, Newport County, Rhode Island. To this union, 9 known children were born: Hester (Ridlon) Hempstead, Constance Ridlon, John Robert Ridlon, Margaret (Ridlon) VanIngen, Noel Ridlon, Louisa Ridlon, Jeannette (Ridlon) Piccard, Hugh Owen Thomas Ridlon, & Beatrice Ridlon.

In 1880, he accepted a position as Associate of Orthopedics at St. Luke's Hospital, New York, where he worked for many years. Due to an argument over the use of and the refusal of the removal of a Thomas Splint, he was not reappointed to the staff in 1888.

In 1889, Dr. Ridlon left New York for Chicago, where he became Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Northwestern University in 1890. He then served Northwestern University as Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery from 1896-1917.

He served as President of the American Orthopedic Association (AOA) in 1895, as well as serving as Secretary from 1891 to 1906 and again in 1918 and1919. He also served as President of the Chicago Orthopedic Club in 1924.

He received two Honorary Degrees from the TUFTS University – one, an A.M. degree in 1899 and another, a Sc.D. degree in 1926.
