Mary was the youngest daughter of John Harman and his second wife Paulina Bartles. The children of John's first wife used Harman as their surname and the children of Paulina used Harmon.

Mary married William Pinkerton Richardson on 16 Aug 1899 in Bynumville, Chariton Co, MO and they had 12 children between 1901 and 1922.
