Robert is the son of George and Lavinia Layton Albin. He married Margaret E. Bartch on December 26, 1867. She preceded him in death in February of 1875. Their children: Annie Ruth Albin, George Henry Albin, Robert Roy Albin, Mrs. Alice Mae Forsyth and Charles Owen Albin. He then married Barbara Bartch on November 16, 1876 in Macon County, IL. She preceded him in death on May 4, 1906. their children: Mrs. Emma Pearl Forsyth, Clarence Ernest Albin, Ivan Grant Albin, Raymond Victor Albin, Samuel Everett Albin, Frank Elmer Albin and Clifford Lester Albin.

Robert enlisted in Company E, 12th Illinois Infantry on August 1, 1861 in Paris, IL. He was mustered out, with the rank of Full Corporal, on July 10, 1865.
