Benjamin Franklin Barnes was born 19 September 1845 near Lisbon, Howard County Maryland, the son of Benjamin Barnes and Ann Elizabeth Brenneisen. Benjamin “Frank” Barnes grew up south of Lisbon, Howard County, Maryland on his father’s farm which he eventually took over. Sometime in the early 1860s he went to Illinois and was there until after the civil war. He came back to Howard County and Baltimore where he met and married Mary Elizabeth Smith in 1873. After their marriage them returned to Illinois briefly but “Mollie” did not like the west and they were soon back in Howard County and settled down on the farm for the rest of their days.
