One of five children of Mr. & Mrs. John Haas, Lt. Cdr. Haas's father was Street Commissioner of Union City, NJ, where he grew up and was educated prior to attending Stevens Preparatory School in Hoboken, NJ and then the University of Pennsylvania where he did both his undergraduate work and was a graduate student in medicine, later switching to dentistry. He served in the Naval Medical Corps during World War I and in the Naval Dental Corps afterward. Remaining in the Navy after the war, he settled in San Diego, CA, where he met Clara Sauer Laflin, daughter of newspaper publisher A. R. Sauer. The two were married in Los Angeles on April 30, 1924. Afterward his duties took the couple to Pensacola, FL, Shanghai (China), and Manila (Philippines). Returning to San Diego, Lt. Cdr. Haas served as a dental surgeon in the Naval Hospital in there and was the dental surgeon attached to the Naval Training Station there in the mid 1930s. In 1927 he was badly injured in an automobile accident and suffered from deterioration of the spine over the next decade. Initially not a debilitating problem, the spinal injury had grown extreme by 1936 and he opted to retire early for medical reasons rather than wait another year which would mark his 20th anniversary in the Navy and the certainty of a promotion to full Commander. Following surgery for the spinal injury in 1937 Lt. Cdr. Haas appeared to be making a complete recovery and although he and his family believed the surgery to have been a success he nevertheless died suddenly shortly afterward; he was 40 years old. He was survived by his parents, his wife, his step-daughter, Marion Laflin Murphy (memorial #58207810), two brothers (Harry Haas and Fank Haas), and two sisters (Lillian Haas Herzog and Frances Haas Curran).
