Daniel E. enlisted in Company A, 137th Infantry Regiment of Pennsylvania on 20 August 1862 and served until 02 June 1863.
While he was serving in the war, Mary Jane delivered Daniel Webster and died shortly thereafter. Daniel returned from the war and placed at least two of his sons, if not all four of them, into an orphanage and then once again returned to the war. He re-enlisted on 26 March 1864 in Company M, 3rd Heavy Artillery Regiment of Pennsylvania. He was mustered out on 09 November 1865.
