Born December 14, 1940 in Holdenville, OK, he was the son of the late Elliott and Imogene (Butts) Mayfield.
David served in the U.S. Air Force from 1959 to 1963 as a Russian language specialist, stationed in Alaska.
He received his PhD from North Texas State University in 1972.
Dr. Mayfield was a member of the American Society for Biology and had been employed with Becton Dickinson in Sparks, MD, retiring in the late 1990's.
He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed skeet shooting. David traveled extensively, having visited all 50 states and several European countries. His greatest love was time spent with his grandsons, Ryan and Nicholas.
He is survived by a son, James C. Mayfield and wife, Dawn of Shrewsbury; two grandsons, Ryan and Nicholas Mayfield, both at home; a brother, Daniel Mayfield, and a sister, Jean Snow, both of Dallas, Texas.
