MARBLE HILL, Mo. — Winford Jay Garland, 84, of Marble Hill died Friday, Feb. 20, 2009, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.


He was born April 18, 1924, son of Ransom Jefferson and Effie Limbaugh Garland. He married Verda "Adell" Garland on Sept. 18, 1943.


Garland was a timber buyer for the Pallet Mill, served as an alderman for the city of Marble Hill in 1970 and then he served as mayor for the city of Marble Hill in 1984. Garland was of the Baptist faith. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II.


Survivors include his wife, Adell, of Marble Hill; five daughters, Wanda (Lindell) Seabaugh, Kathy (Don) Cook, Brenda (Norman) Holweg, all of Marble Hill, Carolyn (Charlie) Smith of Jackson; Sharon (Dennis) Collins of Cape Girardeau; a sister, Nadine Welker of Marble Hill; nine grandchildren, Scott (Donna) Seabaugh, Brett (Mandy) Smith, Ryan (Amy) Smith, Jason (Holly) Cook, Holly (Eric) Maurer, Daryn Holweg (Teresa), Benji (Jamie) Holweg, Jennifer (Billy) Kirkpatrick, Justin Collins (Jackie); and 11 great-grandchildren, Gavin Seabaugh, Autumn Abernathy, Merritt and Luke Smith, Jordan Maurer, Emma and Josy Cook, Kyla and Drake Holweg, Austin and Koleby Collins.


He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Willie, Wilson, Woodrow and an infant; and nine sisters, Nancy Long, Lillie Mecker, Mary Moore, Anna Long, Bertie Cook and four infants.


Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill.


Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Revs. Jim Fulbright and Clifton Trentham officiating.


Burial will follow in Hurricane Fork Cemetery near Marble Hill with full military honors provided by the Missouri Military Honors Team.
