Erwin was the son of Elisha J. and Hester Ann Hills Wood. Civil War Veteran, 132nd IL Vol., Co. C. Editor of several newspapers. Instrumental in bringing a railway line to the Plainfield area which eventually became known as the E. J. and E. Railroad. Was Field Secretary for the Chicago Historical Society. Appointed by President Harrison as Special United States Commissioner to the New Orleans World Fair.
