He was born January 25, 1917 to David H. Clayton and Margaret Cannon in Salt Lake City.
He grew up with his seven sisters and one brother on the farm on west California Avenue. He graduated from South High School and then served as a missionary in the Samoan Islands.
In July 1942, he signed-up to serve in the US Coast Guard serving in the Pacific and European Theaters. Upon his return home he joined the Salt Lake Fire Dept. He became well known for writing manuals and training all over the state.
After his retirement he worked for Mount Olympus Water installing sophisticated water systems and then for Rocky Mountain Fabrication. He was known for his high work ethic, attention to details and completing a job correctly.
On July 7, 1948, he married Ruth Laura Paramore, whom he always loved and cared for. His life revolved around her and their family. He served faithfully in the LDS church including many years in each calling as a Bishop, Temple Worker, Humanitarian Service and especially as a Home Teacher. He was the fix-it man for his neighbors and he kept them supplied from his garden.
He is survived by his sons, Paul (Bev), John (Kathy), Brad (Mardee), 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. They will always remember him for his interest in each of them, his humorous stories, and his knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife (Ruth), grandson (Christopher), and eight siblings (Ruth, Bill, Sally, Margaret, Genieve, Helen, JoAnn, Phyllis).
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at 12:00 Noon at the Rose Park 6th Ward Chapel, 1155 North 1200 West, Salt Lake City. Friends may call on Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple Street and at the Church from 10:45-11:45 a.m. prior to the services.
Interment at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery, 2350 East 1300 South, Salt Lake City.
