He was born Aug. 21, 1919, in Bristol, to John and Cora (Kindy) Hershberger. He married Velma A. Dygert on Aug. 21, 1937, in Elkhart. She died Feb. 6, 1992, in Elkhart.
He is survived by two sons, James (Betty) Hershberger of Cassopolis and Paul (Mary) Hershberger of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; four daughters, Barbara (Robert) Goorhouse of Dowagiac, Mich., and Nancy (Norm) Paulson, Dot (Warren) Johnson and Vicki (Jim) Perkins, all of Elkhart; 20 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one sister, Iris Dills of Goshen; and two brothers, Harold Hershberger of Topeka and Roland Hershberger of Dunlap.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Hershberger; and two sisters, Iva Weaver and Lila Schrock.
Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Billings Funeral Home, 812 Baldwin St., Elkhart, and one hour prior to the 10 a.m. Monday funeral service at New Hope United Methodist Church, 28765 C.R. 4, Elkhart. The Rev. Lee Campbell of New Hope United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Adamsville Cemetery, Adamsville, Mich.
Mr. Hershberger was a retired truck driver for Teledyne Metal Forming in Elkhart, where he worked for 11 years. He formerly worked at Bendix Corp. in South Bend, and was a former milk route driver for the Constantine Dairy, Constantine, Mich. He attended New Hope United Methodist Church and enjoyed going to the daily Funtimers Group at the Salvation Army in Elkhart. He was a World War II Army veteran.
