Classical scholar and Professor of Greek at the Trinity College, Cambridge from 1838 to 1875, when he was awarded an LLD. He returned to the University as Rector from 1884 to 1887. He was a friend of Alfred Tennyson. The two men had been members of the debating club, The Apostles, while studying at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1842 Lushington married Tennyson's sister, Cecilia. He succeeded Henry Fawcett as rector in 1884. He is the only Rector in modern times to have been elected unopposed.
