Joseph was born in Anson County, NC sometime around 1832/3. Residing in Anson County, North Carolina at the time of enlistment. Enlisted on May 15, 1862 at Camp Davis as a Private in the 43rd North Carolina Infantry, Company K at the age of 28. POW on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. Confined on May 18, 1864 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Transferred on August 10, 1864 at Elmira, New York. Died of disease as a POW.
