James Elisha Thomas, 81, of Orange, formerly of Louisa County, died Sunday, February 22, 2009, at Culpeper Regional Hospital.

He was born June 16, 1927, in Louisa County, a son of the late Elisha James Thomas and Louise Mahanes Thomas. He was married to the late Lois Cameron Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was a member and past Deacon at the Mechanicsville Baptist Church, an United States Army veteran of World War II, retired conductor for the RF and P Railroad in Alexandria, life member of the Gordonsville VFW Post # 7638, past district 8 commander and a longtime farmer in Louisa County.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his sister-in-law, whom he raised as his daughter, Sharon Maddra her husband, Jeff, of Louisa; one brother, Raymond Thomas of Lexington, Oklahoma; two sisters, June Mawyer of Charlottesville and Lula Meyers of Dillwyn; and his special niece and nephew, Jessica Maddra and Jeffery Maddra Jr., both of Louisa.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Alton Thomas, Charles Thomas; one sister, Mildred Norford and his mother-in-law, Lucille Cameron.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at the Mechanicsville Baptist Church with interment at the church cemetery. The Reverend Don Reid and the Reverend Greg Compton will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mechanicsville Baptist Church Building Fund, 10200 Louisa Road, Gordonsville, VA 22942.
