He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Anthony Matthews, and his parents Junius Lester and Ida Gemmiae Rhoney Matthews.
Survivors include sons Dale Matthews, Randy Matthews, Dennis Matthews and Darrell Matthews, all of Vale, and Farrell Matthews of Morganton; brother Harold Matthews of Vale; sisters Lunet Deal and Eunice Fisher, both of Hickory, and Virginia Leonhardt of Vale; grandchildren Michelle Malouin, Steven Matthews, Brian Matthews, Johnnie Matthews, Keisha Matthews, Angela Matthews, Justin Matthews, Stephanie Matthews and Brooke Matthews; and three great-grandchildren.
