Army Sgt. Patch was assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Illinois National Guard, Kewanee, Illinois. He died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle. The incident happened while the members were on a joint patrol with Afghan National Security Forces. Units were deployed to Afghanistan as part of the 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and are providing security for embedded training teams, police mentor teams and forward operating bases. Schuyler graduated in 2002 from Wethersfield High School in Kewanee. After his mom moved to Owasso, Oklahoma, he decided to join the Oklahoma National Guard in March 2005. He later transferred to the Illinois National Guard in November 2007. Schuyler was on his second tour of duty in Afghanistan and third deployment in total. He arrived in Afghanistan in December 2008. Schuyler was very much the outdoorsman – if it was hunting, fishing, or golfing, he was there. He also enjoyed playing Texas hold-em, going to concerts, going to Mission Beach, California and was a huge Cubs fan. But above all, Schuyler loved spending time with his family and friends. Easy going and always smiling is how everyone remembers him. He was a loving and affectionate man who cared about everyone. On the Thursday that Schuyler came home, people lined the motorcade route to the funeral home – they wanted to come out to show their respect and support one last time.
