Williams, John " - Of Flint, age 89, passed away on Friday, January 20, 2005 at Brian's House of Davison. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, 2005 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, G3139 Hogarth Avenue in Flint, Reverend Monsignor Richard J. Groshek officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at St. Pius X Community Room. Burial following immediately after the Mass served under the auspices of VFW Post #822 Honor Guard. Those desiring may make contributions to the Saint Vincent DePaul Society or St Pius X Catholic Church Education Fund. Visitation 6:30-8PM Friday, May 20, 2005 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West hill Road. Mr. Williams was born in Marquette, Michigan on May 12, 1915, the son of Nellie (Tierney) and William Williams. Following graduation from Graveraet High School in 1933 he entered the grocery business with his father. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served on Convoy Duty and participated in the Normandy Invasion on the USS Blessman. He left the Navy with the rank of Chief Commissary Steward. He married Mary Jane Walczak on May 8, 1941 and she preceded him in death. After his return from the military service he returned to the grocery business and he, his father and brother, Robert moved the business known as Williams Hillside Market to North Third Street in Marquette. In 1959 John left the grocery business and began employment with the State of Michigan School for the Deaf in Flint. He retired from the school for the deaf. He was an active volunteer with the American Red Cross and the Saint Vincent DePaul Society in Flint. Surviving are a sister, Ruth Bucklin of Traverse CIty, Michigan, several nieces and nephews. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.
