Alice was my baby sister. When she was born, I was told that they needed me to help take care of her. My first duties were to keep her from crying. I soon learned if I put my dirty thumb in her mouth, she would start sucking and quite crying. One day mama found what I was doing, and told me that I had to stop, so I taught her to such her own thumb.

Alice and I were always together, and during most of her high school years she lived with me. For the rest of our lives we both lived in Tulare. We were always there for each other when any need arose.

Alice was an exceptional person. She always opened her home to the Ruffa family when ever they came to Tulare, and Eddie and Alice always included my husband and I at the family dinners. Therefore I became acquainted with them all.

After we lost our husbands we spent a lot of time together, and as we aged we lived no more than across town. We enjoyed a little traveling, and when I had knee surgery she just moved into my spare bedroom and took care of me. More and more, we would eat our evening meal together. Alice bought a new car, and we enjoyed making one last trip to Hearst Castle.

Probably because of some small strokes, she began to loose her memory, and this lose took control of her life. Even after she was living in assisted living, we enjoyed some short weekend outings, and went out to eat many evenings.

It was very difficult to accept that I had finally lost control of my commitment to take care of her. When I went to see her, I wanted to believe that she knew I was there.

I love you and miss you, Alice. (by your sister, Audrey)
