Martha R. Modesitt
— ROSEDALE — Martha R. Modesitt, 88, of Rosedale passed away at 1:10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, 2006, in Union Hospital in Terre Haute.
She was born Oct. 25, 1917, in Terre Haute to Alfred Rush and Rose Pennington Rush. She married David Modesitt on Dec. 21, 1940 in Chicago, and he preceded her on Jan. 22, 1994. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Chet and Charlene Modesitt of Rosedale; two granddaughters, Marcy Williams and her husband Owen of Duluth Ga., and Courtney Modesitt of Gainesville, Ga.; and one great-granddaughter, Kairan Williams. She was preceded in death by her parents.
She attended high school in St. Petersburg, Fla., and Fayette Township in New Goshen. She studied home economics and science and received a bachelor's degree from Purdue University. She received her master's degree from Indiana State University. While in college, she belonged to Sigma Kappa Sorority at ISU and Playshop-Gold Key at Purdue. She was a life member of the Purdue Alumni Club. She worked as a teacher for 14 years, employed at Rockville Training Center, and high schools in Dana, Hillsdale and Stilesville. She also worked as an extension agent for one year.
She belonged to the Parke County Retired Teachers, Parke County Homemakers Extension Club, Library Book Review Club, Women's Department Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Ileostomy Support Group. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clinton and Naomi Circle. She was very active with many other church activities. She also belonged to the Town and Country Garden Club, Band Boosters, and was a 4-H Club leader and a Cub Scout leader. She had also served as a 4-H judge. She enjoyed swimming, reading, painting, lapidary, silversmithing and antiquing. She had traveled to 49 states, Canada, Mexico, Austria, England, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Greece and Yugoslavia.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Frist Funeral Home with the Rev. In Suk Hong-Peebles officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association or Clinton First United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.
