He was a son of Jacob Rhoads (Roth) and Catherine Haas. His first wife was Martha A. Burnett. They were the parents of William Jacob; Mary E.; Samuel; John; and Ada or Addie Rhoads. His second wife was Anna Koons. They were the parents of Franklin K., and Martha Louise.

Samuel Rhoads' obituary:

An Old Citizen Dead.
Died September 1st, 1888.

Samuel Rhoads, an esteemed citizen of Pekin for one half a century, died this morning universally regretted. Mr. Rhoads was born at Selins Grove, Union county, Pa., Jan. 3rd, 1811; was a son of Jacob Rhoads and his wife Catherine Haas. His father was afterwards the sheriff of Northumberland county. In 1836 Mr. Rhoads moved to this city, coming from Pittsburg by way of Ohio River to Cairo, thence to St. Louis and to Pekin by Mississippi and Illinois rivers. He was accompanied, or soon followed by other members of the family, including his widowed mother, his brothers, Henry and Franklin L. and his sister Mrs. Henry Riblet.

In 1845 he enlisted for the Mexican war, served honorably, and is now enrolled as a pensioner for that service. Returning from Mexico, he was engaged for some time with the mercantile firm of Kenyon & durkee; then became senior partner in the well-remembered firm of Rhoads & Hyers. In 1859 he retired from that firm and engaged in steamboating with Captain Frank Rhoads, running the steamers Sam Young and Sam Gaty. Upon the breaking out of the civil war, he enlisted again, and after a service of several months was sent home sick, since which time Mr. Rhoads has not been actively engaged in business.

Mr. Rhoads was married January 24, 1850, to Martha Burnett, who died Dec. 27, 1863. Two of the children of that marriage survive, Mrs. Robinson, of Rock Island, and Wm. J. Rhoads, of the P., D. & E. Ry. A third daughter, Addie, died.

Mr. Rhoads was again married August 24, 1866, to Annie E. Koons, who, together with his son, Frank, and daughter, Martha, survive.

Mr. Rhoads was a brave soldier, a genial, social man, a worthy citizen, kind husband and father, a good neighbor and a steadfast friend, whose history for almost a lifetime is closely woven with that of our little city, that should have been preserved in an enduring form.

The funeral will take place from the family residence on Washington street, Monday morning, Sept. 3rd, at 10 o'clock.
