Ensign W. G. Child, USN, was designated Naval Aviator #29. Graduated from U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1907. Earned his Wings of Gold in 1916.

Commanding officer of the U.S. Navy's first aircraft carrier, USS Langley 1934-35.

Other commanding billets included Commander of Long Island Naval Air Station; Commander of Paiombouf Naval Air Station, France (1918); Superintendent of Pensacola Flight School 1926-29; Commander of Anacocta Naval Air Station 1931-34; Commander of Norfolk Naval Air Station 1935-37.

Retired from active service due to medical problems in 1937.
