The son of son of William & Caroline Augusta (Eichler) Carpenter, in 1860 he was a student living with his parents in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in a house the family called "Homedale."
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty in Lancaster August 9, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Washington DC August 20 as a private with Co. B, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, at which time he was detached to unspecified service. Ordered back to the regiment on May 8, 1863, he honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863, likely never having experienced active duty with the regiment.
After the army, he became a lawyer and married Elizabeth LNU, but she died in 1869. He died at Homedale after a lengthy illness of unknown origin.
