Sadie Mae Smith Howard

ANDREWS Sadie Mae Smith Howard, 88, widow of James Paul Howard, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at Waccamaw Community Hospital in Murrells Inlet.

Mrs. Howard was born Feb. 3, 1916, in Georgetown County, the daughter of Henry Sparkman Smith and Minne Lora Graham Smith. She was a retired seamstress with Oneita Industries. She was a member of the Andrew First Pentecostal Holiness Church, where she served for many years as a Sunday school teacher, and in the Women Ministries. In the middle 1900s, her home was the host of many ``Cottage Prayer Meeting'' in her community. Above all, she was a devoted wife, loving mother, and grandmother.

She was predeceased by a son, James Paul Howard Jr.; and a brother, H. Sparkman Smith Jr.

Surviving are five daughters, Pauline Barnhill of Georgetown; Louise Blakely of Andrews; Naomi McGee of Murrells Inlet; Emily Lee Crosby of Irmo; Lora Driggers of Summerville; five sisters, Ellen Wallace of Geogetown; Goldie West of Florence; Virgie Catherine Vanderpool of Stockston, Calif., Alma Kernes of Brunswick, Ga., and Alice Davis of Columbia; 19 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Andrews First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, directed by Andrews Chapel of McKenzie Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at the Andrews Chapel.
