William B. Dennis was born on December 13, 1818, in Ross County of central southern Ohio to Purnell J. Dennis (1790-1866) and his first wife, Sarah (Penniwell) Dennis, whose grave and dates and places of birth and death have not yet been ascertained. During the War of 1812, Private Purnell J. Dennis had served in Colonel John McDonald's Regiment of the 2nd Ohio Militia. Of the five children born to Purnell J. Dennis and Sarah (Penniwell) Dennis, William B. Dennis was the eldest.

Circa 1845, William B. Dennis wed Rachel Margaret Adaline Littleton (1822-1925) who had been born on October 2, 1822, in Worcester County, Maryland, to Abraham Littleton (1775-1865) and Leah Littleton (1801-1880). Of Abraham and Leah's two children, Rachel Margaret was the eldest; and Martha Catherine Littleton (McNutt, 1825-1927) was the youngest. By 1838, the Littleton family had moved from Maryland to Ohio.

William B. Dennis died on January 17, 1904, at the age of eighty-five in Lawrence, seat of Douglas County, Kansas. and was interred there several days later at Oak Hill Cemetery. More than twenty-one years later, Rachael Margaret Adaline (Littleton) Dennis died at the age of 102 on April 15, 1925, at Elmhurst in DuPage County, Illinois, and a few days later was interred alongside the grave of her husband, William B. Dennis, in Oak Hill Cemetery at Lawrence, seat of Douglas County, Kansas.
