Opera Singer, Writer and Socialite. She was a highly regarded opera singer in the early nineteenth century. She made her debut on theLondon stage as a mezzo soprano in "Norma" in 1841. After a brief but successful career, she retired from professional performance in 1843 when she married Edward Sartoris. In 1867 she wrote "A Week in a French Country House", a humorous story that would be the first of several. In 1874 she was a guest at the White House when her son married the daughter of United States President Ulysses S Grant. In later life she was famous for her social soirees, which were the inspiration for her friend, the artist Frederick Leighton's "Leighton Musics".
