BATES, Jefferson D. - Jeff Bates, about 60 years of age, member of one of the most prominent families of Arkansas, living near Hiwasse, was drowned Sunday afternoon in White River at Slick Rock Ford when he attempted to save a woman from drowning. The woman was saved but Bates had sunk several times before he was rescued from the water. He was taken to Rogers immediately and a pulmotor was used in an attempt to resuscitate him but he was already dead. Bates was in swimming with a large party when the call for assistance was screamed. He valiantly attempted to save the woman, whose name was not learned, but all efforts were futile and he sank, exhausted from his heroic efforts. The deceased is a cousin of A.J. Bates of Bentonville and is related to other person here. He had been a life-long citizen of Benton County.

Jefferson D. Bates, 63 years old, a well known farmer living a mile and a half north of Hiwasse, was drowned in White river Sunday afternoon at Slick Rock ford in an attempt to rescue a daughter-in-law who had been wading in the river and had gotten into deep water. Mr. Bates and wife and his son Roy Bates, and wife of Hiwasse and another son, Marion Bates and wife from Columbia, Mo., were members of a picnic party that stopped in Rogers Sunday morning on their way to the river for a family picnic and outing. Their return Sunday evening was a sorrowful one. Marion Bates and wife were wading in the river below the ford when Mrs. Bates unexpectedly stepped into deep water. Mr. Bates went to her assistance and both were soon beyond their depth. The father, who is credited with being a strong swimmer and vigorous for his age, reached Mrs. Bates quickly and as sh grabbed him they both went under the water. It is supposed Mr. Bates was attacked with heart trouble or cramps for he sank and after coming to the surface and making a few futile strokes, again sank before anyone could reach him. Roy Bates, in the meantime, swam across the river and secured a boat and reached his sister-in-law in time to save her life altho the boat was overturned by her frantic struggles before he got her to shore. Marion Bates had managed to get into shallow water and crawled to the shore. An immediate search was made for the body of the father but it was some thirty minutes before it could be found and taken from the water and life was extinct. Coroner Callison was called and the body was brought to Rogers and Monday was taken to the home and the funeral was held at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery. The deceased had lived in Benton county many years and was a cousin of Jack Bates of Bentonville.
