Orrel R. 'Oats' Johns, 81
PLAIN CITY - Orrel R. "Oats" Johns, 81, of Plain City, died Friday morning, Aug. 24, 2007, at his residence, after an extended illness.
Born Dec. 6, 1925, in Zanesville, Oats retired from Reliance Universal after 42 years of service. He was a World War II Navy veteran, Yeoman 2nd Class station on the USS Ebert, (1944 -1946) patrolling the coast of Europe, Africa and the Middle East, and a proud member of the Navy Choir. He was also a member of the Plain City VFW Darby Post 3268. His love of high school sports was shown through with his two decades of involvement in the Jonathan Alder High School football and basketball programs keeping the official scorebook. An avid bowler at the Plain City Bowling Lanes, he loved to participate in local and out of town tournaments with his wife and other couples.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Ruth Embree Johns, who was an inductee into the Muskingum County Music Hall of Fame as part of the original Embree Trio; his loving children, Jeff (Denise) Johns of Lawrenceburg, Ky., Tad (Brenda) Johns of Mount Vernon and Terri (Bruce) Moder of Milford Center; eight grandchildren, Tristan Johns, Rusty (Amy) Johns, Tabitha (Steve) Paas, Wendy Albright, Nikki Smith, Brian Mulkey, Benjamin Moder and Bethany Moder; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Edgar (Amy) Johns of Cincinnati.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Elizabeth Taylor Johns.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Plain City VFW, 241 Maple St., Plain City.
Graveside services are 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27, 2007, in Forest Grove Cemetery, Plain City. Pastor Gerald Heimlich will officiate, with full military honors conducted by the Union County Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Loving Care Hospice, 113 S. Main St., Marysville Ohio 43040.
